I believe Mormonism is an offshoot of Pretestantism as is Adventism. Protestants mostly split from the Catholic Church.

When we become judgmental of comparative religions the risk of offending others is very great.

You are not offensive nor did I see you as being judgmental, just descriptive (and wrong). But, you are not alone. Many do not understand the beginnings of Mormonism and how it found its early converts amongst those who believed in a return to the original apostolic church as founded in the earliest days during and closely following the death of Christ.

Joseph Smith claimed his church to be a restoration of the original church and not an offshoot of either Catholicism or Protestantism. Again, I would encourage anyone really interested to read the book by Bushman.
