That's why a well-conceived smear of an opponent can work to one's advantage --- if you can find a way to play up to strong biases and preconceptions held by a segment of the public, you can tell 'em what they wanna hear ANYWAY, regardless of whether any of it is true or not, and likely peel off a segment of voters to your side because they will believe the smear because they want to.
