Hi Mike,

"Where do you get that he's liberal?"

Hard to put a finger on it, but maybe the best example is State of Fear. Talks a lot about how liberal hysteria over certain environmental issues have resulted in policies that have nailed the coffins on hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people from the very poorest nations. DDT is a good example(read: hup.harvard.edu. The banning of freon in poorer countries, without subsidizing its substitute is another, albeit less disastrous example.

This doesn't sound like a conservative to me...more like a pragmatist. The worldwide banning of DDT is one of the more incredibly insensitive things the so called liberals have ever done, IMO. The result makes Darfur look like a cake-walk.

Anyhow, Crichton's emphasis on the negative impact that certain environmental laws has caused makes him sound more like a bleeding heart rather than an insensitive money oriented neo-conservative.

The Charlie Rose web site has been upgraded to show all of his past shows(thank you, youtube.com). Crichton has been interviewed six times from 1995 through 2007. If you can't get a sense of his political ideals from that then Rose needs to go back to journalism school. <G>

Go one-third of the way down the resulting page from the link above and look on the left in the box labeled: Explore Video Archive. I've spent hours listening to some of these interviews. And no commercials! (warning: the search text box results don't seem to work).
