They train their whole lives for something that most of us hope will NEVER happen. When they get a war, they don't want to let go of it. Who knows when they'll get another? Which is why Bush is an idiot for letting "the generals" decide how long we flog it in Iraq.

"Together with the bonding with the other folks in the same situation." I think this is the biggest factor in this war. Unlike Vietnam, they are allowed to bond, units are moved in and out of theater intact instead of piecemeal like in Vietnam. A totally different dynamic.
