I think a LOT of soldiers feel similar. They train their whole lives for something that most of us hope will NEVER happen. When they get a war, they don't want to let go of it. Who knows when they'll get another?

Which is why Bush is an idiot for letting "the generals" decide how long we flog it in Iraq.

I think this is the biggest factor in this war. Unlike Vietnam, they are allowed to bond, units are moved in and out of theater intact instead of piecemeal like in Vietnam. A totally different dynamic.

I'm not really qualified to explain. But the experience of war, risking your life for something you have to believe is important, is very powerful. At risk of death all the time. Together with the bonding with the other folks in the same situation.
