philv,
The truth is that outside of here, Europe, Canada and a few other places there is NO welfare state of any substance or degree.

This would include most of the world, and especially where the vast majority of the world's people live.

No food stamps, no public provided old age pensions, no government provided healthcare.

Thats not to say that government never provides anything of this sort, most do on an emergency basis and as they can for disaster relief and the like. And there may be a smattering of old age pensions in a few places, but amounting to very little, maybe ten or twenty dollars per month, and usually available only to a tiny proportion of the elderly, usually retired workers from some of the larger businesses. Most places don't even have this.

And in most places government might have some role in building hospitals, schools and even housing, but some wags might say that by the time you account for all the corruption, it might be better to just let the people take care of these problems too.

The truth is that most places just cannot afford socialism on anything like the scale that you may have there in your country.

Its not as bad as you might think. People get by, the children take care of their own parents in their old age and there is a great deal of local private charity.

Seems to me that the poor places tend to have the happiest people. And there is a wonderful feeling of freedom in these places, and a spirit among the people that anything is possible. Socialist countries feel like being in a morgue, by comparison. Accident? I don't think so.
