There are and were plenty of photos of commercial aircraft going down. And the immediate aftermath of the crashes. Now true, those not related to takeoff or landing tended to go unrecorded, but...

And this is despite the fact that there haven't been very many airliner crashes. The spitting on returning soldiers was supposed to be common. Yet no one managed to photograph it, nor did any of the spittees wind up in the hospital or filed suit.
