It is one of the reasons why they aren't as common here. The particulates need to be taken care of and that drives up the costs.

Of course, the likely larger reason is that during the fuel crunch in the 1970s, some of the diesel engines the car companies sold were just converted gasoline engines. And they had some nasty starting and running problems. So diesels got a bad reputation.
