"Why is it bad for someone to tilt the in his favor - if he can afford to?"

Because it tends to lead to a driving style that puts the burden of collision avoidance on others.

I have a 1986 Fiero that I dearly love. However, morons with 4x4s are rather quickly reducing it to junk. I can't seem to park it far enough away to where it won't be backed into or otherwise damaged. They've ripped the rear bumper off, broke a part of the fiberglass on the body off, damaged the tail light, shattered both quarter panel windows, twice, shattered the passenger window and put a tear in the nose. Most of the damage is high enough that only a large vehicle could have done it. Needless to say, none of them have had the courtesy to leave a note of any kind...
