If they were to adapt it to a diesel generator/battery combo, they could have a platform for future vehicles just by changing out the power supply. So, if fuel cells pan out, or ultracapacitors or, what the heck, a Mr. Fusion, then the basic vehicle stays the same.

GM has a lot of smart people working for them. Sadly, none of them seem to be in management...
