I've like New Zealand ever since they refused to let our nuclear Navy ships port there. Seems like a very sane country.

combjelly,

Probably. Both parties value ideology over pragmatism. And it may be that a lot of people feel the same.

True about the parties, not necessarily true about people who vote in general elections. I think NYC may be an example of that. NYC, is, as you probably know, a one party place. Republican party is nearly non-existant. So we had guys like Giulliani and Bloomberg leave the one party (Dem) and run under GOP banner, but both running as pragmatists rather than ideologues, and both won in a very tough place that many called ungovernable.

The thing about the parties is that the ideologues are energized about their issues, show up, do the work. And as a result, the parties cater to this kind of stuff as a matter of survival and maintaining relevance.

I do know that when I started a thread about a third party founded on pragmatic principles, it degenerated into an ideological slag fest.

I don't think the party is ever going to happen for the reason above. Where do you get the volunteers and funding? The fact that the thread degenerated is a good indication of that. People who post (pationately and voluminously) are the people wedded to their ideologies, and the pragmatists don't show up.

Joe
