Keep away from and do not participate in any standards bodies and processes. Buy the rights to things you want to use in your own products.

Compete in an open market.

Anti-trust laws preclude conspiracy to form standards to reduce competition - not that that has been tested, but it will be when the lawyers see a good enough pot of money to attack.

The GSM conspiracy was a world class effort and involves stealing intellectual property from USA companies, namely QUALCOMM.

They come up with a silly "disclosure" or "declaration" rule and then use that to leverage possession of the property for no charge.

Deny standards bodies any use of one's own property.

W-CDMA would not now be going anywhere. CDMA2000 would be streets ahead of GSM which would also NOT be enjoying free use of QUALCOMM technology, thereby upgraded to GPRS and EDGE.
