1. The Z-RAM cache cell is fundamentally different from an SRAM cache cell, and needs to be designed from scratch. I consider transistor design to be backend work, don't you?

2. After designing the new cache controller, and the cache cells themselves, you'll want a team to lay out the design and create the masks needed for manufacturing. More backend design work.
