``Even if Hurricane Dean peters out far from oil and gas rigs in the U.S. Gulf, there may be other storms brewing, soon,'' said Peter Beutel, president of Cameron Hanover Inc., in a note today.

With Dean's landfall several days away, many oil and gas drillers are already making preparations in the event Dean turns toward rigs. Transocean Inc. has evacuated 75 non-essential personnel from Gulf rigs and will evacuate all 92 employees from its Amirante semi-submersible, its rig farthest west, by the end of today, according to spokesman Guy Cantwell.

A heat wave forecast over much of the U.S. next week is also proving support to gas prices.

Energy demand in the U.S. is expected to run 18 percent above normal over the next seven days, according to Belton, Missouri-based Weather Derivatives.

``It's a combination of fears over Hurricane Dean in the Caribbean and the hot weather that's expected for the next week, but mostly it's storm concerns,'' said Christopher Butschek, a research associate for Raymond James & Associates in Houston.
