In what constituted a fairly remarkable breach of diplomatic protocol, Mr Bryza even went so far as to name someone he thought the AKP should pick as an alternative presidential candidate to Mr Gul. This has all the makings of another large foreign policy blunder by the Bush administration. If the US is going to intervene in Turkish politics, it would be better advised to warn the military that it will not tolerate a coup. Whether it likes the AKP's policies or not, it should surely accept the wishes of the Turkish electorate, for a number of reasons. First its amazing this is the first we have heard of Bryza's interview.........an interview where he publicly interfered with the affairs of another country. He should have been recalled immediately. Where the hell is the American media alerting us to this crap? Secondly, is it any surprise that Turkey is turning to its Islamic neighbors. For the past few years, we have treated Turkey as if it were a poor relation. With the singular exception of Bush supporting Turkey's admission to the EU which, in reality, was a throw away since by the time Bush made that recommendation, EU/US relations were so bad there was no way in hell they would have listened to Bush, we have done pretty much everything wrong with Turkey. The one strong, secularist democracy in the Middle East and we have acted as if it were in our hip pocket without question. Given America's indifference coupled with Turkey's repeated rejection by the EU, it is no wonder they are turning away from the West.
