Nikkei sheds 5.4%, or 874 pts, closing at lowest level in 12 months+

TOKYO, Aug. 17 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Tokyo stocks entered a free-fall for a third day Friday with the key Nikkei index plunging more than 5 percent, closing at its lowest level in 12 months, as the market mood edged toward panic on the combination of a surging yen and remaining uncertainty about the global financial market.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 874.81 points, the largest point drop this year, or 5.42 percent, ending at 15,273.68, its lowest finish since Aug. 7 last year.

The Nikkei index has lost 1,896.92 points since Aug. 9.

The Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 87.07 points, or 5.55 percent, at 1,480.39.
