Dear Tench:

Not at the time I bought my CPU. And I use the historical definition, not the newer slippier one.

I saved the original rev 3.00 release of the Opteron data sheet. The new 3.17 one split it into three pieces with rev E.

amd.com

From table 33 on page 75:

Table 33. Thermal Power
Symbol Parameter Unit Min Typ Max Notes
PVDD VDD Thermal Power W 80.6 1
PVDDIO VDDIO Thermal Power W 1.960 2
PVLDT VLDT Thermal Power W 1.80 3
PVTT VTT Thermal Power W 0.250 4
PVDDA VDDA Thermal Power W 0.083
PThermal Total Thermal Power W 84.7

Notes:
1. Defined as IDD_max at VDD_typ.
2. Defined as IDDIO_typ at VDDIO_typ – VOH_min. This determines the power dissipated on the CPU. The remainder
of the power for VDDIO is dissipated in the off-chip termination. IDDIO_max should be used for power supply design.
3. Defined as ILDT_max at VLDT_typ and includes power for three 16x16-bit HyperTransportâ„¢ links operating at a
speed of 800 MHz /1600 MT/s.
4. Defined as ITT_max at VTT_typ. Includes I/O for DDR SDRAM and miscellaneous outputs and internal current
consumption.

In essence, maximum possible power consumption. The Xeon P4s of that time were already using the TDP of Intel claiming a TDP of 85W where TDPmax was over 100W.

Pete

PS: The family TDP at that time was 89W. People sat out and calculated it with the 5 power supplies on the previous page. The sum of all Vmax * Imax for all 5 power supplies was just under 89W. Definitely an absolute upper bound on thermal dissipation power.

Re: AMD uses the exact same acronym and definition as Intel.

>> LOL, good find.

Well, notice how Pete's defense is that they "used to" go with the older definition. And I suppose since Pete is a good traditionalist, he'll continue to use the old definition when it suits him better. No need to consult silly things such as AMD's most recent specs when having an argument about who has lower power... better to use an obsolete standard and apply it to a new set of numbers, to prove that AMD is indeed far more competitive than Intel in everything, the end.
