It gets better......a Bush official is telling the Turks whom they should elect as president:

"There are some in the US government who are hinting that the administration might drop, or at least temporarily suspend, its enthusiasm for democracy and support, or at least make it clear it will not oppose a military crackdown.

In a recent interview with a Greek newspaper, Matt Bryza, the top State Department official on Turkey, warned the AKP not to polarize the country. In what constituted a fairly remarkable breach of diplomatic protocol, Mr Bryza even went so far as to name someone he thought the AKP should pick as an alternative presidential candidate to Mr Gul.

This has all the makings of another large foreign policy blunder by the Bush administration. If the US is going to intervene in Turkish politics, it would be better advised to warn the military that it will not tolerate a coup. Whether it likes the AKP's policies or not, it should surely accept the wishes of the Turkish electorate, for a number of reasons."
