I believe as a country we're hooked on them now and there is no going back.

All Democracies end up going this way. It's amazing we are not as far down that path as the Euros.

Sadly, I agree. But I think we should continue to resist further escalation and further sense of entitlement to the fruit of the labors of others. (In my heart of hearts I'd love to see everyone who signs up for one of these programs have to sign a statement indicating that they understand they are being supported by the taxpayers.)
