It used a 12A 2 rotor Wankel engine with a 4 barrel carburetor and a thermal converter rather than the standard catalytics of the day. It had a 140HP at 7000RPM. The used one I got had the RPM limiter removed and did 30MPH in first, 55MPH in second, 100MPH in third and 140MPH in fourth all at the 7000RPM redline. I could take it faster due to the missing limiter. I had it up to 153MPH on a long straight in eastern Montana on I94. It did not have an overdrive gear. I probably would have gone faster, if it did. It was also jetted quite rich to get the thermal converter to work right. Because of that, it could run the regular leaded gas of the day. It had a GVWR of 1680lbs and could outrun Ferarris, Porsches and BMWs of the day. Those that wanted more power out of them, just rejetted the carb with leaner jets and put in a higher capacity fuel pump. They normally got between 240-300HP out of the engine. Some did replace the transmission with a five or six speed with overdrive. It was an extremely reliable car. My biggest problem with it was the lack of a cruise control and overdrive. With the national 55MPH speed limit, it wa shard to maintain that. You would be driving along and would feel the second pair of barrels open, the engine smooth out and glance down to see that you were just going over 75MPH. So you would coast down to 55MPH and try not to speed up failing, if you didn't check it at least 6 times a minute. Although driven at 55MPH, it got about 24MPG, it was too easy to go faster. A higher overdrive gear would have both saved gas and made it easier to maintain 55MPH, not having those gobs of waiting acceleration. It finally rusted out in 1987. I was sad to retire it. Pete
