We'd easily have the money to do those things if we partnered with other countries, and set aside warring. The entire world cheered us when we went to the moon, and wanted into the game.

It would be much more interesting, exciting and rewarding than fighting over resources down here. The universe is full of resources just waiting for us to claim them. It would take vision and leadership - a truly GREAT leader.

I've often wished some aliens would show up, just to scare the hell out of us and get us united and out there. Imagine what a skilled fearmonger could do with real extraterrestrial ALIEN aliens!

An alternative would be finding something extremely valuable in space.
