Go 2 Guy: Cougars outsell the Huskies
By JIM MOORE
P-I COLUMNIST

It's a shocking development only because it's taken this long. For the first time, Washington State has overtaken Washington in sales of college sports merchandise, according to the Collegiate Licensing Co., which tracks these things.

From July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007, Texas sold more merchandise than any other school for the second year in a row, but the Cougs are one of the rising stars, moving up to 34th in the county. The lagging Huskies were 36th.

Asked to explain the uptick in sales, Pete Isakson, WSU's associate athletic director for external affairs, said in part: "There's something special about being a Cougar. I defy you to find a Cougar who doesn't have six sweatshirts, 10 T-shirts and a jacket. There's a pride there. People want to wear their colors."

Isakson said the sudden success of the men's basketball team also helped.

When asked about the significance of the Cougs passing the Huskies, Isakson went the politically correct route and simply said: "We're just trying to do the best job we can. We want to lead the Pac-10 in everything we try to do. We want to grow the CLC licensing, just like we want to grow all of our programs."
