Rents may be increasing. I don't know. What I do know is that if renting is cheaper than buying then it is a good time to rent. Potential buyers should definitely be doing the math.

Rent + utilities vs (mortgage+utilities+taxes+insurance+maintenance+repairs) - (any increase in home value at end of rental period)

Note that the rightmost segment of the equation is likely to be a large negative number right now, which would highly favor renting.

Who says rent is increasing? You can rent for free in any of the outlying areas where the bubble has bust.
