Considering that we have not had any troops in Germany since 1947, I hope we can make just as hasty of a retreat from Iraq. </sarcasm> I would hope that the US would be based there for a long time in the future. Perhaps the richer ME nations might make it too difficult for Iraq to cooperate with a nation from the West. But if we maintained bases there in sixty years, it might indicate a long and strong relationship. They will probably tweak our noses some times, Germany and Japan do and have for a long time.

Peace in the Middle East might look many different ways. One thing I would hope to see is the deportation and / or incarceration of foreign terrorists. (It could hurt Iran if their Revolutionary Guard were incarcerated in another country.) Since recent reports indicate that most terror in Iraq is carried out and planned by foreigners, their absence should reduce the anarchy that Iranian supplied terrorists are inflicting on the country.

It is possible that after we help them find peace, they move towards a more islamic federation and away from a secular republic. It would be an improvement as long as they are not a leader in the ME arms race.
