re: Free markets and free trade tend to point in that direction.

So your borderless society would elevate the standard of living of Chinese workers and lower the standard of US worker to an equal average?

re: It's not what I want or not. It is just a question of recognizing the trend.

Like I said; defeatism. Your argument for lowering the US standard of living is abhorrent.

re: There is one thing that would help US competitiveness vs. the rest of the world regarding imports/exorts. The taxation in the rest of the world in generally on consumption, in the US, it is on production. We are shooting ourselves in the foot. The US companies follow this perverse incentive very well - they produce elsewhere (at increasing levels) and import goods to be consumed in the US.

Well, if you lower the standard of living you will get your wish of lower consumption.

You blame the "dummy" US citizens; I blame the leadership. We are looking at record trade deficits because we can't face the biggest challenge of the coming century, getting off oil as an energy source. And the business opportunity that represents. We also need to retool our industries to actually make products at a competitive price. Not all that hard when you consider transportation cost.

Go ahead and root for the "other guys".
