Please explain to me the difference between a Barcelona die and a Phenom die.

A shipped Barcelona die needs to function at speed with another (2xxx) or 7 other (8xxx) parts. It also needs to run within a TDP limit. Neither is true of the demoed Phenom. And, they would not allow benchmarks on it... wonder why not?

I see nothing that would prevent AMD from releasing 3 GHz Barcelona benchmarks at launch, do you?

See above. Also, releasing benchmarks for parts that are 50% faster than those you are shipping looks pathetic. There isn't any Barcelona over 2.6GHz even on a roadmap, as far out as H108.

How about the expectation that if AMD publishes 3.0 GHz benchmarks, while having only 2.0 GHz parts available, that will discourage people from buying the available parts, and encourages them to wait for the non-existant parts ? Thereby driving AMD's revenue further into the black hole that it will be stuck in anyway.

Now, if AMD had 3.0 GHz parts ready to ship, that would be another matter. Of course you were expecting AMD to ship 2.6 GHz barc's back in June, right ?

re: Nope, no *Barcelona* has been demoed at 3GHz, let alone shipped

Please explain to me the difference between a Barcelona die and a Phenom die.

It is rumored that some of the issues that stop Barcelona
from running at its intended clock speed are related
to SMP cache coherency.

If the rumors are correct, there's a big difference
between a sellable 3Ghz Phenom and a sellable
3Ghz Barcelona 2xxx chip.

Benchmarks? Well, if you want to see 2 chip spec rate,
there may be a big difference between Phenom and Barcelona
dies that are willing to hit 3Ghz.
