Lindy,

I recently had need of the US medical system and it worked fine for me. As I have gone through the post op bill paying experience I have found my bills totally manageable. My total out of cost for the deductibles will be about $2500.00. My work paid me on short term disability.

Fortunately the $2500 is not an issue for us. Also being paid for the 8 weeks I was off work made the whole thing essentially a non event financially.

I must say though, someone without the financial resources of our family could find the situation extremely challenging.

I would never want to give up the accessibility of our system. I do recognize that even with insurance the cost of illness can be simply devastating. I also note that the cost of services is simply beyond the means of people without insurance.

I'll tell you what I think about GOVT HEALTHCARE based upon a personal story in my family. My brother, who had medicare and decent insurance switched over to the VA cause he could get his prescriptions cheaper (originally free). Well, he went EVERY 3 MONTHS bloodworks, physical etc. then one day he felt really bad and went and they said you have CANCER, he died two weeks later with it throughout his body. TWO WEEKS now if you think he didnt have that for a long time and it was UNDIAGNOSED then I have some swampland to sell you. My wife bugs me to go the VA for same reason, Prescriptions, and I said, NO WAY. I want NOTHING to do with GOVERNMENT CARE. Its fine if you break a bone but DONT expect it to save your life by diagnosing a disease early. jdn
