Look, if you have a book about people eating pork, it isn't a slap to the Jews and the Muslims, it's just about people eating pork.

Those congressmen eating the pork might even be Muslims or Jews!

Both homosexuality and marriage are very religiously charged issues for the vast majority of religions in the US. When you deal with the issue of gay marriage in schools, particularly elementary schools, you're treading on religious beliefs.

No? Let's suppose that instead of speaking in a neutral or approving way about gay marriage, the textbook spoke in neutral or approving way about the honor killing of errant female family members.
