Intel actively considering acquisitions in solar energy sector - sources UPDATE

HAMBURG (Thomson Financial) - Intel Corp (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ) is actively considering making acquisitions in the solar energy sector, sources close to the matter said.

The US chip giant has already made contact with potential target companies, including some in Germany, the sources told Thomson Financial News' German partner dpa-AFX.

Samsung Corp. is also considering acquisitions in the industry, they added.

Chipmakers share common ground with solar power companies, with silicon being the key raw material in the manufacture of both processors and solar cells, said Hans-Martin Rueter, head of the German solar industry association.
