No doubt mice would help the Spotted Owls, but I doubt the chef would use them in a Spotted Owl dish served on rice.

I once worked in an area that had many Spotted Owls. There was a particular nest that our biologists liked to show brass hats and other visitors. They always brought a poor gerbil with them and tied it to a log near the nest. The gerbil's fate was quick, and no doubt painless.
