But I wouldn't be surprised if Apple holds off on announcing the 1 millionth iPhone until their earnings report. It would be just like them to wait, and then say something like, "We've sold 1.2 million iPhones since the launch."

I don't think they've waited to announce some iPod and iTunes milestones:

Over Two Million iPods Sold - apple.com
100 Million iPods Sold - apple.com
iTunes Music Store Sells Over One Million Songs in First Week - apple.com
iTunes Music Store Downloads Top a Quarter Billion Songs - apple.com
iTunes Music Store Downloads Top Half a Billion Songs - apple.com
iTunes Music Store Downloads Top One Billion Songs - apple.com
iTunes Store Tops Two Billion Songs - apple.com
iTunes Store Tops Three Billion Songs - apple.com

Based on this history, I'd guess they will announce at 1 million and 10 million for sure as that's one of their stated goals. They might even throw out a short press release at 2 million or 5 million. Next major mile marker after 10 million will be 100 million!
