I want to live in a market economy, too. Housing inflation is largely & nearly completely caused by interventionism: 500k every two years tax break; you can itemize your mortgage interest; submarket based interest rates; liar loans; and the non stop steal tax of printing money out of thin are to balance the gov't books and create monetary inflation which has resulted in persistent retail inflation for all of my life.

So the house prices going up, for the most part, is completely unrelated to the fact that we live in a market economy. Or mostly... maybe 1/10th of the beta of house prices is due to natural ups and downs of a business cycle and the rest is due to mostly Fed/Prez/Congress interventions "for our own good."
