However, if the royalty rate is closer to 5%, which is consistent with what QCOM receives from other licensees

These are the royalty percentages that I have calculated for QTL over the last 10 quarters.

4.15% 4.04% 4.18% 4.60% 4.50% 4.46% 4.15% 3.76% 3.90% 4.01%

I do believe that Qualcomm receives 5% from some of their licensees so some must be lower than the average rate. Nokia and Sony Ericsson are the obvious candidates....especially since the royalty rate dropped just as these two companies were becoming a larger percentage of QTL's total revenue.

Let's focus on the impact of future WCDMA handset sales and the strong growth expected, no matter who makes the handsets.

Everything points to continued strong WCDMA handset sales. I believe that Q's recently revised estimate of 180 million units will still prove to be low.
