It depends on how old your computer is. Typical sizes for new computers are 512mb and 1gb. I recently upgraded my new computer which had 1gb in the form of two 512mb dimms. It has two memory slots. I went to 2 gb in the form of two 1gb dimms. I had two 512mb dimms left over (which I still have) They won't fit in my old computer.

Make sure the memory you buy has the same male connector type as the one's you have. They're standard, but have changed over time.

Expanding memory should be in your computer's manual, what type of dimm's you need and can use, etc. It's a thing users do.
