There is certainly an avoidance/minimization of it as clearly there are more heinous things, such as child abuse, murder, etc., but that is not the subjct. Slavery is the subject and it is always, without exception, wrong." You can read whatever you want into my comments but I will only account for the integrity of my own words. Using current moral equivalents from modern society to judge ancient cultures is a fools game that I wont play. In ancient times there was no coin or employment equivalent of today's society. Of course there were conflicts for power, real estate, wealth, status etc as always. Conquered people had nothing but death from cold and starvation to look forward to. The conquerers may have seen executions as euthanasia for all I know but there was another option which was to allow them to live and work as subjects of the conquering people. Freedom is a nice modern word but in our use of the word it would have meant a cruel turning out with no resources and certain death in many of those cases. Maybe you think there were nobler choices and maybe there were, I don't know. We think it is noble to provide minimum wage doing menial repetitive tasks day in day out year after year, for single mothers... so you can live in a government owned project or a slum. That's a nice choice, go to work to obtain subsistence under some bastards with a high rate of harassment, abuse, assaults and rapes to look forward to, or you and your children live in poverty. Ok there was brutality in some slave cultures, have you checked the stats in Free America lately? We liberated women to this. We are soooo good. Yes slaves were low status in service roles with little or no opportunity to move up. Does anything similar exist today without 'slavery'. These are the conquered people of corporate America. I prefer to keep trying with what we have and will always object to slavery but lets not get too arrogant about how much better we have made the world and how much nicer we are than our ancestors, or how much worse slavery was for ancients considering the options available to them.
