That is a big part of the problem. When you figure about 1/2 your paycheck goes to various taxes, it's incredible. Ask your neighbors if they know who is their Congress person, their state rep or even local town manager and they often don't even know the name, let alone whether they are spenders out of control. If someone comes up with ideas that are radical, they are branded as "loons". Look at the NSS industry defenders you find on this site. Some claim to be scam fighters but they look the other way as soon as this issue is discussed, then come back and say it's no problem.
