J. Crew falls after results; Altera backs sales view

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- J. Crew Group Inc. shares dropped sharply Wednesday evening after the clothing retailer's quarterly results missed Wall Street's targets, and shares of Altera Corp. were slightly higher after the chipmaker backed its quarterly sales outlook.

JCG) shares were down 8.5% at $45.50 in recent trading. The apparel chain posted second-quarter net income applicable to shareholders of $20.6 million, or 32 cents a share. Last year, it lost $2.8 million, or 8 cents a share, due to a charge related to preferred stock dividends. On an adjusted basis, the company earned 21 cents a share. Revenue at J. Crew rose 13% to $304.7 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 29 cents a share on revenue of $308.5 million.
