re: Even if you don't consider all the indirect effects and all the industry that is dependent on fossil fuels, the transportation and energy production industries are themselves huge, and would have to be greatly restructured.

Funny, I don't hear the same concern about the ramifications of globalization.

It would be a hit to the oil companies, but a gradual hit. The auto companies would benefit by an accelerated replacement cycle. Gas stations might take a hit.

On the other hand there would be a lot of extra money in the pockets of consumers from both the better gas economy and the lower gas prices. That money would flow into other stuff; creative destruction. A net positive? I think so.

re: I don't really oppose that because should it be needed its something we can probably do without massively harming ourselves

You can't claim "massively harming ourselves" without being specific. You sound hysterical.

Think about the disruption caused by the personal computer over the last 15 years. How many products did it eliminate? How many skills did it make redundant?

The "restructuring" based on the PC makes energy efficient look like a day at the beach.

Anyway, get used to it, it's going to happen. Or we will be in a shitload of trouble.
