you could be very right about the thrifts. dealing with banks around here, it looks like things have changed a great deal in banking. At the local branch level it seems to me people either have no authority or are incompetent. I am disgruntled with a regional bank where i have my checking account so I looked at 4-5 state banks who have more of a local presence. I was not impressed with the personnel that I saw at any of the banks. I didnt see how they were offering anything more than I could get from an on line or out of state bank. From the above I surmise that credit scoring has taken over and that relationship banking is now a foreign concept.
