"can it be argued that people are more happy today than 100 years ago"

If YOU went back in time and took the place of an equivalent person, no doubt you'd be VERY unhappy. Whether the person living 100 years ago is happier or unhappier is another question.

I know I've been much worse off than I am now, but no less happy. Happiness is an internal state that really has nothing to do with how you are doing objectively. I used to work with physically disabled retarded people, some of whom were VERY happy, that taught me this.

You think you're free mr hinton. We're not here because we're free. We're here because we're not free. There is no escaping reason; no denying purpose. Because as we both know, without purpose, we would not exist.
It is purpose that created us.
Purpose that connects us.
Purpose that pulls us.
That guides us.
That drives us.
It is purpose that defines us.
Purpose that binds us." (The Matrix Revolution 2003)
