Thanks for the recommendation to buy a previous generation Intel IMac, clean.

I have one and you are right, they do have matte screens. It was on that basis were going to buy one for my wife. And assumed that the "glossy screen" bit would be in the realm of the acceptable.

However, my concern with the previous generation is the 2 gig ram limitation (sounds absolutely silly to say that having started with the original Mac in 84). We want to be able to insert at least 3 gigs (the MacBook Pro) or 4 gigs (the new Intel IMacs). The reason is that we both use Parallels a great deal. It's a memory hog to get it to run reasonably quickly.

Moreover, our experience has been that we need to buy as far forward as possible if we wish to continue using the computer for some time. So we routinely buy as much ram as possible and as large a hard drive. And find that by the time it's necessary to buy a new computer we have too little of each.

So we're reluctant to buy backward.

We've thought about buying a Mac Pro but the cost really jumps. So, at the moment, I'm waiting on two things, hoping her PC doesn't break down. One is for Apple to announce a future (soon) option for matte screens for the new IMac. The second is for a third party anti-glare film/filter.

Got my fingers crossed on both.
