Excuse me for interpreting that as meaning you think religion and culture are inseparable.

I'll certainly excuse you if you'll excuse me for not being more clear. (I'm exercising great discipline in not adding my usual grinny.)

I think that religion and culture are inseparable in that lots of religious institutions not only promote religious truths, they also weigh in on cultural matters. They have done so for so long that it's hard to differentiate even for those inclined to do so. Religious institutions are not going to stop doing that and people aren't going to stop accepting it. Some of them would take the skills of a Talmudic scholar to sever. Some of them may not be severable at all. So in the broader venue, they are inseparable. But I think we must try, at least in the official and legal venues, if we're going to live together.

I can't for the life of me understand why the religious left can't see that.

Perhaps because their religious/cultural practices are more compatible with pluralism and secularism so their ox isn't being gored, at least not in the short term. Folks rarely foresee things shifting back against them.
