"It's possible this could become a real issue for the '08 election. The best thing that could happen."

Yes, it's possible (and it would be a very good thing) but I don't think it's very likely that will happen.

BOTH Parties have been pretty craven about this issue for a very long time, BOTH defaulting in a very knee-jerk manner to most *any* policy that enhances federal power.

(I believe that mostly only the Libertarians have ever consistently opposed the creeping federal power-grabs in our system... while at best the two dominant Parties only sporadically spout rhetorical complaints --- while never effectively opposing Big Brother.)

It is possible that the public's increasing opposition to these self-serving federal power grabs will be allowed to occasionally be aired on our national media... or that one or both of the big Parties will stand up, but I wouldn't count on it just yet. (Too many vested interests at play.)

Good video: Ethan Nadelmann on FOX News

Interviewing Lou Dobbs in October after releasing his book, War on the Middle Class, Jon Stewart quipped, "When America declares war on things -- drugs, terror -- usually the subject of that war ends up doing quite well." U.S. attitude towards controlling social ills has become increasingly blind to reality. In the video to the right, Fox News covers Ethan Nadelmann's position (shockingly even giving his idea a chance to marinate), which appears in the current issue of Foreign Policy magazine, that the U.S. needs to shift away from an all-or-nothing approach on drugs and embrace a pragmatic one.
