Yes, but those beliefs are your own opinions, not something you are commanded by some powerful outside entity to believe and pursue, let alone spread either by persuasion or force. You can modify them at will if you find something more constructive. And you can more easily respect those of others because all beliefs are individual human opinions, all subject to error.

Try arguing with a committed Chomskyite and see how far that idea takes you. It is human nature to believe one's beliefs, to take them to heart and love them dearly and modify them grudgingly. The millions of believers in Nazism and Communism didn't need belief in God to be persuaded of their ideas, or to get license to spread them with persuasion and force.

Someone who has tried hard to examine his own beliefs and think them through will respect the like effort in other people. But it's not how most people acquire or keep their beliefs. Religious or not makes very little difference here.
