I recognize the potential inconsistency of eating animals (including "factory farmed" animals, while at the same time not opposing a prison sentence for animal abuse because of concern for the rights of animals.

I don't think that killing animals is abuse or cruelty if they are killed humanely. The cruelty comes from the suffering, not from the death.

Furthermore, even in the bad old days of the old west, people had the decency to spend a bullet to shoot a horse with a broken leg. We can't call ourselves civilized if we do less. Or perhaps I just saw two many western movies when I was a kid.
