the believers in Marx or Chomsky can be as absolute as any religious fanatic.

I'm not questioning that they can be just as absolute and just as fanatic. That's them.

No necessary difference in effect.

But focus for a minute, instead, on us, on society, and how we deal with them. When someone claims God as an absolute authority for something, we may roll our eyes but we can't logically challenge them. We can't challenge them, in part, because there's nothing substantive to challenge given that it's all intangibly supernatural. It's supposed to be about faith, not logic. And we can't challenge them, in part, because it is politically incorrect, in the non-derogatory sense of that word. We're supposed to respect other people's religious beliefs. We need to respect other people's religious beliefs if we are to get along in a civilized society. Whether they believe in Jesus as a third of a Trinity or in reincarnation or in angels, that's that. They're entitled. Period. We don't have the same requirement as to their political or philosophical beliefs. One is off limits; the other isn't.

That's a difference in effect.

The religious man may have the understanding that human knowledge of the divine is necessarily imperfect; but the believers in Marx or Chomsky can be as absolute as any religious fanatic. No necessary difference in effect.

Nadine,
That is one brief but extraordinarily profound statement.
Thanks for sharing it.
