If it weren't for the Fed's actions, the second Great Depression began this week.

When there's no confidence there's no money - and who would lend money to a nation which needs to borrow several Billion each day, especially after several years of passing bad paper.

Whether we can still muddle out of having too much debt relative to income is yet to be seen, but excessive leverage always introduces fragility and instability.

I think a depression is the least painful alternative, but this sentiment is not widely shared.
