I recall a story about a trick Rove did in Texas to defeat the candidate who was in the lead. He accused him of something and then in some way wangled the evidence into the guy's office so that it was substantiated. The guy lost. It was pure,unadulterated nasty politics but that is the way Rove has always played. Very pragmatic.. Whatever it took. Personally I cannot abide the man. Did you ever see a picture of when he was young with horn rimmed glasses... A complete nerd type but always brilliant and trying his best to make life great for all Republican candidates.
