My receiver of preference back then was a Hallicrafter.
Much later, like in the 80s, we used a Japanese receiver with great SSB SW and narrow filter options to receive Radio Japan, when we lived in Europe. I had a 2:1 asymmetrical dipole hanging between two large trees over our house.

With a good signal received one really had a feeling of achievement.
Al that fun gone now with worldwide TV.
