Hello LindyBill,
I was recently in China... I saw clean city streets, far cleaner than many city streets in 'Toronto the Good' for example, huge numbers of silent non polluting electric scooters and electric motorized bikes, highway interchanges, ramps , and exits in all cities I saw were surrounded by well tended green space (put many Canadian and US cities to shame)... Huge numbers of buildings using solar water heating.. Not a trendy gimmick like in North America.. Yes I saw tons of coal barges on the Yangtze.. Also many cities have public transit (bus and taxi) exclusively on natural gas. They are also building lots of public mass transit (subways).. I guess I was looking at the wrong places :O) They sure have lots of problems still but it looked to me like they are being quite proactive and are headed in the right direction... Granted it's a big ship to turn but I saw huge positive changes since my last visit in 2000.

JMVHO based on what I actually saw.

Edit: and yes like the US and Canada it's a big place.. so there must be lots of regional disparity I missed.... but still it's not all doomsday..
