Back in the 80s, when my husband was with a large Dallas firm, we used to do a lot of dining and recruiting. One night we gave a dinner for a lovely young man from Harvard. I said, oo, Harvard; that would be a good hire.

My husband said the bigger question was, was he really what the firm was looking for. (they were trying to move beyond the good ol' boy Texas firm thing and hire more women and minorities). He said affirmative action had caused some real problems at this educational level (law school), that the Harvard degree carried far less weight than it normally would when a candidate was black. Experience had shown that minority candidates from top schools were sometimes not as qualified as the firm required. That seems incredibly sad to me, and how unfair for the hardworking, bright black kid who DOES deserve to be there, and then gets hit with this new kind of discrimination.

How does one even determine who is black anymore? By the color of skin? By his parentage, grandparentage, greatgrandparentage, etc????

Could another factor be there just aren't as many kids (all colors) being born right now? Our birthrate was ZERO percent growth in 1970. I think it is a bit less than that today.

And one more thing....IF we have to talk about percentages, then what is the current percentage of "white and black" today?

If anyone can figure out how to determine either/all, and what that definition is, it would be good to know. Do the affirmative action folks even know?
